FAQ
Where should I store my belongings?
Well, that’s an easy one to start with – with The Space Place! We have clean, dry, modern, purpose-built self storage rooms inside clean, dry, older buildings (we believe in the Eco adage reduce, REUSE, recycle)!
So, how do I store with The Space Place?
You can make a reservation here on our website, or book over the telephone, by post, or in person. Or you can simply turn up, show your ID, sign a Licence Agreement, pay 4 weeks’ rent in advance, and a deposit equal to 4 weeks’ rent and then store your things.
Are all your rooms the same size?
No, our rooms range in size from a broom-cupboard to the size of a double garage, and the cost of the room varies according to the size of room you rent.
Can I get my stuff at 3am?
No. We think most “reputable” people can manage using their rooms while we’re around to help, and keep a watchful eye on what’s going on. We don’t think our customers want other people wandering around the buildings at odd hours of the night…. So, at night we lock the buildings, turn the alarms on and let Camwatch monitor the CCTV cameras to make sure no one is silly enough to try getting in.
OK, so when can I access my stuff?
Any time you like during our opening hours:
- 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday
- 9am to 5pm on Saturday
- 10am to 2pm on Sunday and Bank Holidays
The only days we are shut are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
What’s in my neighbour's room?
None of your business! But don’t worry, it won’t be anything that can damage your things.
Can I have my neighbour's key if there’s anything good in it?
- a) You won’t know whether they’ve got anything good in there, and
- b) Customers put the padlock on the door to their room and they keep the key, so not even we go into their room (unless we absolutely need to), so
- c) No, you can’t!
OK, if I can’t get at my neighbour's stuff, when can I get at my own?
Any time you like during our opening hours:
- 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday
- 9am to 5pm on Saturday
- 10am to 2pm on Sundays & Bank Holidays
What can I store in my room?
Almost anything! But, for obvious reasons, we can’t allow things that might hurt:
- Things that might go “BOOM” – explosive or hazardous goods
- Things that might go “BANG” – firearms or ammunition
- Things that might make people go “ARGGHHH” – toxic, pollutants or contaminated goods
- Things that might go “WOOOSH” – combustable or flammable materials such as gas, paint, petrol, oil or solvents
Perhaps less obviously, we also forbid:
- Birds, fish, animals or other live creatures
- Food or perishable goods, unless securely packed so that they don’t attract nasties
- Anything that’s smelly or emits fumes
- Anything illegal – “substances”, stolen stuff – remember the “Old Bill” have statutory powers to enter and search our premises
Alright, I’m honest, and I’m only going to store “good" stuff. Tell me, honestly, what size room will I need?
To work out how much space you’ll need, either call us, on 0800 756 6585, come in and see us, or use our Quote Estimator.
We promise that we’ll rent you only what space you need. If your needs change, tell us. We’ll find you a smaller or larger room to suit. And if you need a smaller room, and we can’t actually find the right size you need, we’ll leave you where you are and only charge you the rent for the smaller size.
Given that no one can stop “un-forseen events”, wouldn’t it make sense to insure my things?
Absolutely, quite right. So much so we insist on it. We want all our customers to have complete peace of mind. We want you to know that not only are we working hard to look after your things, but that, if the worst should happen, at least you won’t suffer financial losses.
If you can show us that you’ve already got cover, that’s fine. Otherwise, we’ll arrange it for you. In Leicester we include insurance cover in your room rental rate. In Telford, we arrange it separately for £3.25 per £1,000 worth of cover every 4 weeks.
You bang on about your Carbon Footprint. What else are you doing to reduce it?
We’ve installed PIRs on all our storage area lighting, so lights only come on when someone is there. Once they come on, they’ll stay on for 20 minutes or so if they don’t detect any further movement. If they go off while you’re in your room, go out in the corridor and shake your booty (or just step out there) and that’ll turn them on again for another 20 minutes….
We have encouraged all our people to abandon their cars and cycle to work. To make it easy for them, we’ve joined the government sponsored “Cyclescheme”, where we pay for the bike and let staff buy it off us over time. So far, only one of our staff has taken up the “challenge” – see if you can tell which one she is….
How can I be sure my stuff will be safe with you?
We understand that customers want clean, dry and secure storage. We can’t promise you things will be 100% safe, so we don’t. But, what we can promise is that we make all reasonable efforts to make sure your things are safe and sound with us.
Both our sites have state-of-the-art electronic access control systems, and all our rooms are individually alarmed. You choose a PIN that you use to get into and out of the building. Entering your PIN opens the electric entry doors, and turns on (or off) the alarm on your room.
Both sites have CCTV cameras covering key areas. These are recorded 24/7 and monitored out of hours by specialists Camwatch.
Both sites have full intruder alarms, and, again, these are monitored out of hours. The fire detection systems in both sites are state-of the-art; these too are monitored 24/7. Of course, the alarm lines are monitored by BT Redcare.
And finally, all our rooms require you to lock them with a padlock. You put the lock on, and you keep the key…
I’ve got a question you haven’t answered here
OK, we’ve tried some obvious Q&As, but if we’ve missed yours, call us on 0800 756 6585, or email us from the Contact page. We’ll try and answer you. Clearly and honestly.
Do I need to give notice when I’m leaving you?
Yes. You need to give us 14 days’ notice of your intention to go. That way we can plan our room rentals a bit better..
How long or short a time do I rent a room for?
The minimum rental period is 4 weeks. After that you can keep the room for as long as you like. We’ll just keep invoicing you until you give notice to leave. Then, when you leave, we’ll calculate any refund due on a daily basis – you’ll only pay for the days you actually stayed with us. And, if you’ve been very good, paid all your rent, and left your room empty and tidy we’ll give you your deposit back at the same time.
How often do I pay?
When you take your room, you pay the first 4 weeks’ rent in advance. After that, we’ll invoice you for the next 4 weeks about 10 days before the next 4 week period starts. We can send you invoices by post or, if you’ll let us be enviro-friendly, by email. You can then send us payment in the post, call in and pay, ring us and pay with a card over the phone or, if it’s easier for you, you can pay by Direct Debit (and, again, this’ll help reduce our Carbon Footprint)
Now I know how little it will cost, how can I pay?
You can pay by
- Cash
- Cheque
- Debit Card – but not Solo or Electron
- Credit Card – but not AmEx – they charge us a fortune to process payments!
What about discounts?
Of course! Pre-pay for 6 months and we’ll knock 5% off the cost. Pre-pay for 12 months and we’ll give you 10% off.
Otherwise, look on our Home Page for Special Offers (if we can persuade our Finance Director to allow any…)
So, I know how big a room I need, what will it cost?
Our Quote Estimator will tell you the price for the size of room you need. If you know the size, choose which site you will be using, enter the room size and it’ll tell you the price.
If you don’t know the size you need, use the Transport or Item Estimator tabs with the Quote Estimator to gauge the size, and it’ll tell you the price.
